“Find something you’re passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it” Julia Child
I am Karen Ciano and I’m passionate about food. Am I a foodie? I’m not really sure. When thinking about writing this, my first blog piece, I started asking myself and others a few questions.
Firstly, ‘what is a foodie?’
Wikipedia’s definition is: ‘A foodie is a gourmet, or a person who has an ardent or refined interest in food and alcoholic beverages. A foodie seeks new food experiences as a hobby rather than simply eating out of convenience or hunger.’
So I continued to ask questions and read. I asked a ‘food bloggers’ group I’m a member of on social media for their opinion. Didn’t that open up a can of worms?! Mostly they hated it and found it very offensive to be called a foodie. They did however give me a few labels they did approve of, gastrophile and gourmand among others.
General food loving friends didn’t mind the term. So I asked some friends who currently work in busy Sydney kitchens as qualified and experienced chefs. They didn’t like it either. They said they thought it wasn’t “a term people in the food industry use to describe themselves.” That also opened up the whole Reality Television debate! A chef friend said “It’s like the whole Master Chef thing, people who don’t really understand the whole industry and how hard it is and just think they know about it and how food should be! But I guess it makes people interested in food which keeps us in a job!”
I love how she sees both sides of the story, even though we did it the old-fashioned way, did our training, long and hard hours and we’re still waiting for our book deals!
While its glamourising the industry, it’s also educating people at the same time, opening their interest and tastes.
The term was first used in 1980 in the ‘New York Magazine’ in an article by Gael Greene. It seems to have dramatically changed over the years, as the industry changes with it. So, am I a ‘foodie?’ and will I be writing a ‘foodie blog’, no I don’t think so.
I am interested in food, I produce food, I am a chef and have years of experience in the industry, not all in the kitchen though, I can also work the floor, very well, and am pretty good on a coffee machine! I wouldn’t call myself any of those other names though, they all sound a little pompous to me! I’m a Mum with a food business, just doing my thing! I’ll be sharing my anything that is food related, sharing my passion and love with you.
