by Elizabeth Gilbert
I knew from the very first page that I would love Big Magic. I felt like it was written for me, was sometimes about me, and that it would most likely change me. It has.
Before I tell you what Big Magic is all about, let me tell you a little story.
Once upon a time there lived a beautiful and very talented and determined writer called Elizabeth. When Elizabeth was a young child she was frightened of everything and anything. Luckily for Elizabeth she had an equally determined mother who loved her very much, whom at every turn made Elizabeth do exactly what she dreaded most. Face her fear.
It was not until Elizabeth reached adolescence that she realised fear was boring and not that original. What she thought was the most interesting thing about her, was actually the most mundane. Everyone had a relationship with fear. She was no different.
Around that time Elizabeth realised she had a passion for writing and made a girlhood vow to write for the rest of her life. Her journey with fear took a different turn, and Elizabeth embraced it. She took fear with her on her journey alongside creativity, and although she gave fear a seat, and a voice, she never let fear ever be in charge.
With a lot of hard work, perseverance, and after she had eaten a few shit sandwiches along the way Elizabeth became a very successful author with many books published. Her most popular and successful book was Eat, Pray, Love, her story. This particular book was read and loved by millions all around the world, and a few years later they turned it into a movie. Elizabeth herself became famous, starring on the Oprah Winfrey show for instance, as well as being named among the Time 100 most influential people in the world.
Since then she has written and published a couple more books, gotten more famous…and that finally brings the story to here today…
Elizabeth has done it again, written another book from the heart, a book called Big Magic, that again will be read worldwide, empower and inspire those that read it.
In Big Magic Elizabeth shares stories not only from her own life but from her friends and those that have inspired and influenced her, and she challenges us as readers to embrace curiosity, tackle what we love most and face down what we fear most.
Big Magic is all about creative living, courage and fear, giving permission, pigeon holing and persistence, being playful, it’s about winning and losing, being curious, and ideas choosing you, it’s about trust, and hidden treasures, and mostly being true to YOU.
I loved it.
Elizabeth’s frank yet friendly way of writing makes you smile, and keeps you interested. It’s a wonderful read, entertaining yet thought-provoking with light-bulb moments and sprinklings of magic. I loved how she makes no promises, she minces no words. She tells it how it is. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anybody creative or to anyone who wants to live a rich and splendid life…
Read it and see…
And me? I have realised that the times I was most happy was when I was living creatively, being curious, and didn’t care what others thought, I was living my life the way I wanted to. Since reading Big Magic I am back in the swing of writing again, I have given myself permission, and have total trust that if I put in the work, say yes, the magic will happen.
